Abstract
Music therapists working with mentally retarded children individualize treatment goals according to five broad categories. Therapeutic music experiences can be organised to promote appropriate behaviors and/or to minimize inappropriate behaviors. Music therapy can promote the development of motor skills and learning ability. Experiences in music therapy can enhance language development and improve vocal production. Well-planned therapeutic music experiences can assist mentally retarded children to master basic skills, such as attention, following directions, maintaining eye contact, as well as the learning of difficult concepts. Music therapists can help mentally retarded children incorporate meaningful musical activities into their leisure time. This includes listening and performing.
